General:
Aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial rooting in mud; stems slender, 5-15 cm long, with widely spaced internodes.
Leaves:
All opposite; linear, 5-20 mm long, single-nerved, their bases not joined by a ridge or wing, light green.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of tiny, inconspicuous flowers borne without bracts, stalkless or shortly-stalked; styles soon deciduous, ascending.
Fruits:
Achene-like, 4, each 1-seeded, wingless, 1-2 mm long, egg-shaped, irregularly pitted.
